Trying to pin down an idea, its harder than you think!

I spent the week researching and trying to get a definite idea in mind.
I was looking at Rachel Whiteread, and Anthony Gormely and David Lilburns book 'Walking , Drawing and making memory' I really liked this book and his style, it have me the impression of a map, as in if you put all his drawing side by side you would be able to trace where he was going.
I liked the idea of map making as it has a lot to do with space and finding (sensing) your way.

I was exploring the idea of making a new kind of map, a map only I could read. I began drawing my walk home, as it is on the canal and a little bit dodgey.
I did this a few days but I didn't know where to take it so i kept looking for new ideas

When I came home for the weekend my mam had collected these washed up pieces of crab from the beach and they were worn and eroded by the sand and the sea. I thought they were very interesting and started drawing them in an investigatory manor to try and see how the crab was made up.

Research Week...

This week I met my tutors and they told me to keep brainstorming but to research as much as o can this week down in the library. What I didnt realise was how diffcult the library was to figure out, but i managed to get there in the end.

I was looking at Louise Bougeoius's Cells and how she delt with space.

I really liked how she related to confinement of space to her past and home life with her father and his many affairs.

I spent alot of the week watching the youtube videos that they had given us, I really liked Richard Serra and Anish Kapoor and his use of space in the gallery he was given.

I watched this video on Idris Khan I really enjoyed it, I loved the way he incorporated music into his art work.

To Sense My Space

In the first week we were given out brief 'To sense my space'.At first i was VERY confused, i had no idea what they wanted us to do. In the brief it talks about
-Space
-Shape
-Depth
-occupation
-control
- Positive and negative
-Movement
-Noise
- and strength

All of this was very overwhelming because whatever idea we had it had to last til Christmas. The last thing i wanted was to have an idea that I could only take so far and then have nowhere to go.
So in  all this confusion I started researching artists that I knew like Rebecca Horn, Sophie Calle, Louise Bougious and then I remebered Racheal Whiteread, who incorporates space into her work so much! I remebered house:

She put it in suburban london and had cast an ENTIRE house out of cement, leaving the positive shape (air) full of cement. I love this piece.

Racheal Whiteread cast of table and chair, cast of neg shape in resin.

Racheal Whiteread , Torso,
Cast of  a hot water bottle in plaster

Racheal Whiteread Cast of book shelves in plaster.

She put it in suburban london and had cast an ENTIRE house out of cement, leaving the positive shape (air) full of cement. I love this piece.

I researched racheal whiteread alot and I knew i wanted to deal with positive and negative shape in my OWN way.
So I started Brainstorming...alot.

I worked alot in my contexual notebook because I knew research was something I could do, and do alot of.
I took out loads of books from the library on Racheal Whiteread,  David Lilburn , Kathy Prentergast.

I really liked the idea of doing something with Maps like Kathy Prentergast and David Lilburn.
